As CHA plans for future development of healthy, complete, sustainable communities, where should CHA focus its efforts?

Families, women with children, people with disabilities all have programs geared to assist them. There are no safeguards or programs for Adults without children. Single people who fall on hard times or become homeless are forced to remain homeless. The city needs to create housing that focuses on homeless singles and singles that are at risk of becoming homeless.

Request HUD expansion of the housing choice voucher program (HCV) (with two year term limits) as a separate portfolio incorporating eminent foreclosures in the Chicago metropolitan area, to prevent homelessness and further expansion of CHA waitlists. Create a low profit limited liability company (L3C) to administer the HCV component, manage foreclosed properties for banks charging fee for service, and hire skilled, qualified ...more »

The CHA is a great resource for those that are low income and are facing difficult times. I was one of those people. I think the overall idea is to help those in need, become self sufficient. However, I think that the whole system isn't organized enough to help people do so. I find this to be very true for many that have the HCV. Many have been evicted and lost vouchers because of non-payment to owners, due to abatements, ...more »

However, I think that the whole system isn't organized enough to help people do so. I find this to be very true for many that have the HCV. Many have been evicted and lost vouchers because of non-payment to owners, due to abatements, missing paperwork from owners, etc. Furthermore, tenants are faced with handling court issues themselves when payment are not made by CHA when cases like this occur. This is really a horrible experience, especially when the tenant is not at fault. This issue needs to be looked at because how can a person become self sufficient if they are homeless.

It all begins with the people. Instead of thinking of CHA as something for the poor, you must not only make it about the people, but should include them as well. Whenever a development is slated to open or be a part of a certain community, community input should be considered. Residents of that particular area, in addition to city of Chicago residents "overall" should be able to provide input as to what they believe ...more »
It all begins with the people. Instead of thinking of CHA as something for the poor, you must not only make it about the people, but should include them as well. Whenever a development is slated to open or be a part of a certain community, community input should be considered. Residents of that particular area, in addition to city of Chicago residents "overall" should be able to provide input as to what they believe would be needed to make the development successful. Winners can reach out to those that have not fared so well, and the successful and not-so-successful can combine ideas on what works. These ideas can then be presented to CHA and the community will have spoken. There can be no CHA without the people ... that will inhabit their property. In other words, include everybody. Everyone welcomes the right to be heard, especially when it involves their own community. Who knows what works best in a particular area than those that live in it?

I think the first thing the organization should focus on is treating the participants with the utmost respect as they have treated the owners for years. The organization has allowed the participants to be treated as low lifes for years by the public and the organizations employees with the poor attention which is given to the problems and concerns of the participants. The public should know the participants are qualified for the program based on financial reason, not the way he or she chooses to live their life.

As written the orginal plan had implied dates with time limites and the rules as written were enforced as written. So if the violation was a result of a visitor then the fine, or replacement was applied to the lease holder's account. The accountability and the responsibility of the maintaining of the property and the units are the tenants and until the rules, policies and procudures are enforced on the CHA properties ...more »

The FSS Program can and has worked. The desire to become a productive mamber in the comminuty has resulted in many families moving into their homes a,d the investment they have made with the purchase has resulted in the next generation within the family the desire to work and want for more than just a low rent roof over my head apartment in the projects.

Mayor Emanual has suggested that Walgreens should receive financial incentives to build stores in communties that are considered food deserts. These are often minority and/or low income communities. Yes or no?

I know the city is fully aware of the importance of the former ickes site on Cermak/State. With the CTA Green Line station being planned for Cermak/State/23rd and all the talk about restaurants, music venues coming into Music/Motor Row just 1 block east of this site, ANY affordable or mixed-income housing will be a devastating blow to the great potential of creating a utopian flow b/w Chinatown, South Loop, Bridgeport ...more »

With the CTA Green Line station being planned for Cermak/State/23rd and all the talk about restaurants, music venues coming into Music/Motor Row just 1 block east of this site, ANY affordable or mixed-income housing will be a devastating blow to the great potential of creating a utopian flow b/w Chinatown, South Loop, Bridgeport and Bronzeville + McCormick Place.
There were only about 70 or so families living there (lets's say an average 3 per unit = 210 residents) from 2008 until the the tear down, so even if you build units for even 70 or so families, the perception of housing projects will once again persist and stop the high-quality of development (potential) this location has to offer.
Any form of Mixed-income market project will not work here as it has not worked in many other areas, but especially in the South Loop -- there are plenty of Rental, New Condo and Re-Sale options. More importantly, the area has it's fair 'share' of affordable housing:
1. Hilliard - across the street.
2. 2001 AND 2101 S. Michigan.
3. 26th/State (Dearborn Homes).
Right now is the time to make a REAL investment that will bring Hotels to support McCormick place, Retail & Restaurants to support the visitors and residents, but more importantly to build Commercial Buildings to house companies. Create a NEW BUSINESS DISTRICT to this specific location.
With the proper development it is a location unmatched in all of Chicago without being downtown (dealing with the heavy traffic, cost of lunch/dinner, parking $$$). You are only 20 blocks from the middle of downtown, Millenium Park, etc..) and 8 blocks from Soldier Field, Museum Campus.
TAG LINE: Going to the game? museum? chinatown? work? mcormick? music venue? Leave your car at home and stop at either the Cermak Green Line or Cermak Red Line.
* If you decide to drive: Take 55 or LSD/MLK or 90/94/290, Michigan Ave or State Street.
You can see the potential for not only the South Loop, Bridgeport, Bronzeville, but also McCormick Place and the City.

There are few fathers in my mixed income community and although I know most of the children in my neighborhood thier parents are never out with them.Start limiting the time a family can stay in pulic housing, eliminate traditional public housing in the mixed income communities it is detrimental to the entire area. I am a tenant of Daniel Hudson Burnham Apartment for 6 or 7 years. I am a senior citizen with a low income. Television Entertainment is almost essential to the tenants. It's the only indoor entertainment most of us have because most of us cannot or are unable to get out much. Even with excellent staff (Social Worker and Manager) we yet need tv entertainment within our apartments. Comcast is very expensive, RCN is also ...more »

Because rent is based on our income (low) why can't we have low-income cable/dish service? Can CHA please contract with someone who will assist us? Will you consider this in your new Reformation Plan? Thank you.
