Help residents and voucher holders start businesses to become self-sufficient.
CHA supports families as they strive for self-sufficiency in a range of ways, such as employment training and retention assistance, child care programs, scholarships and substance abuse treatment. Moving forward, what should the goals be of services for residents of subsidized housing? What mix of services will help reach these goals?

CHA should continue to offer opportunities for residents and voucher holders to receive computer training, if current program with Tech Services could be expanded as well as promoted more this could help residents.

Why not start helping single parents find good paying jobs that provides them with health and dental insurance? Some of these agency that are supposed to help residents find jobs are only interested in boosting their numbers by pretending like they are helping residents. I know someone who used to work for this one agency that had a contract with CHA and he said that the agency wanted him to mislead and lie to residents ...more »
Why not start helping single parents find good paying jobs that provides them with health and dental insurance? Some of these agency that are supposed to help residents find jobs are only interested in boosting their numbers by pretending like they are helping residents. I know someone who used to work for this one agency that had a contract with CHA and he said that the agency wanted him to mislead and lie to residents about helping them find jobs when all they really wanted was to boost their numbers, which he refused to do because he cares about his people. And paying 30% of your income towards rent is a lot to pay when a person only have limited income.

The Housing Authority has a wonder Family Self Sufficient Program that helps families come into their own. The Housing Authority should also consider a change in the contracts with vendors that the vendors would be expected to hire at least 10% of their staff from participants living under the Voucher Program and/or participants living in the mixed income units provided by the CHA.

Voucher holders should receive self-sufficiency education when accepted as tenants. This could be as simple as a handout that includes examples of typical situations, to a list of additional resources avaialble within the City of Chicago network. CHA tenants must understand that the landlord is NOT responsible to provide a replacement light bulbs when one burns out. Break the cycle by removing the caretaker mentality ...more »

Change lives from dependency to independency by creating incentives and drives to foster integrity, respect, honesty and making a person feel complete as well as being more resourceful. Change the environment by addressing social and economic conditions. Do not allow the underground economy (drugs and gangs) to infiltrate. Set up strict rules and abide by them. Focus on the children by bringing in programs or mentors that can lead to viable education and employment.
African – American especially are the biggest consumers. There should be seminars and workshops to show them how to use their buying power to save and invest and eventually move out of CHA.

Work with the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention National Advisory Council and the Illinois African American Coalition for Prevention to identify and develop a Communities that Care Model for traditional public housing communities, with specific youth development and social integration strategies for at risk/high risk adolescents between the ages of 13-17.
